Faye Pickelman

Current occupation?
Owner, Soul Squeeze Cellars.

Got a nickname?
No, thank goodness!

What’s Faye Pickelman’s elevator-pitch bio?
With a degree in Accounting, minor in French, Masters Certificate in Viticulture and Enology, Masters Certificate in Christian Formation and Spirituality, and three kids, sometimes I'm not sure how I ended up here. I like to take the scenic route.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Traverse City?
It's beautiful! Living around the Great Lakes, vineyards, orchards and farms is truly a blessing!

Favorite drinks?
Pinot noir, it is the only beverage that links my scent to memory. Whenever I drink it I remember Northern California, Pacific Coast Highway. Nonalcoholic? probably coffee with almond milk.

What’s your favorite spot and/or time to drink?
My front porch.

How do you live a healthy BDC lifestyle?
Exercise, prayer/Christian meditation, playing with the kids.

What are some of your personal mindful, better drinking habits or guidelines you live by or try to live by?
Definitely drink within my personal limit (no more than three drinks, two if higher alcohol than 6%), no shots ever!

What has influenced your drinking habits throughout your life? Have any particular positive or negative drinking stories shaped your current relationship with alcohol?
I've had my negative moments with alcohol in the past. One day, by the grace of God I woke up and realized I didn't want to experience another hangover.

Describe a favorite (or not so favorite) memory that is forever tied to a specific drink or experience.
Going back to that positive association with Pinot Noir—driving up the California coast with my husband. Best vacation ever!

If you could put your name on any drink, what would it be, and why?
Pinot Noir. It’s a challenging varietal to grow, but has extraordinary potential.

What do people never ask you that you wish they did?
All the questions in this Q&A! Not sure if I've ever been asked these questions.

If you had no obligations, what's your ideal "day off"?
Early morning before sunrise with coffee and a book, morning with the kids, afternoon nap and dinner with my husband.

What's your ideal vacation? Money's not an option.
Somewhere that offers a bit of everything, beach, skiing, family activities, good food and drink.

What do your mornings or evenings look like? Tell us about your routines and how they set you up for a positive day.
Reading God's Word, prayer, 30 minutes of exercise, getting the kids a good breakfast, and off to school on time.

What's your favorite life hack, app, or tool that helps you through the day?
I'm a disappointment when it comes to using my smart phone.

What could you not live without?
My family, but on a less serious note—a good pair of jeans.

If you could leave behind some truths of life as your legacy, what would they be?
I still have to work on my famous quotes, but for now I'll lean on one of C.S. Lewis' truths. "Experience: that most brutal of teachers. But you learn, my God do you learn."

In a sentence or two, why do you support and live a BDC lifestyle?
Alcohol is a gift not to be abused but to enrich life!

What's the most valuable advice you’ve ever received/lesson you've learned that has made a significant impact in your life?
Knowing your purpose in life and becoming the best version of yourself is the best gift you can give the world.

Who should we grab a drink with next?
Shawn Harvey who manages wine at Burritts in Traverse City, MI
